Common mistakes you’re making when cleaning your carpet

To make sure you’re not cutting the life span of your carpet short, we’ve uncovered six common carpet cleaning mistakes most of us make without realising.

Here are our tips to help you keep your carpet in great condition:

  1. Don’t use a coloured towel to remove a stain
Once it’s said it seems rather obvious, but many of us rush to clean up a spill with the first towel we can get (usually the kitchen tea towel), without considering the dye from the fabric transferring on to your lovely beige carpet. Instead, stock a handful of plain white towels under the kitchen sink and you’ll be raring to go then next time a spill occurs.
  2. Don’t over shampoo
We’re all guilty of it. We want to make sure we’re getting our carpets as clean as possible so we add just that little bit of extra soap each time. But little do we realise that over time, the build-up of soapy residue can be impossible to clean out, and cause dirt to cling to the soap in the fibres of the carpet. This couldn’t be easier to solve, simply resist adding that extra bit, and follow the manufacturers’ guide for the correct measurement for the surface area you want to cover.
  3. Don’t over wet
From spot cleaning to deep cleaning, excess water can soak into the bottom of the carpet causing a number of issues; from a damp smell, to carpet lifting, and dark patches. Your carpet underlay will also become damaged as the moisture soaks through from the carpet. When it comes to deep cleaning your carpet, only use the recommended amount, and for those occasional spills, blot the area with a cloth to soak up as much of the moisture as possible.
  4. Don’t just vacuum clean your carpet
We all know that we need to regularly vacuum our carpets to keep them clean, and free from pet hair, dust and dirt. However this is only picking up dirt on the surface of our carpets, and by not giving them a deep clean every 6-12 months, you’re shortening the life span your carpets deserve. By giving them a good deep clean, you can prevent a build-up of allergens and destroy the breeding ground of bacteria that is currently in the fibres of your carpet.
  5. Don’t forget to test products first
There are a large number of carpet cleaning products available on the market, but what we’re not all aware of is that they are not suitable to all materials and colours. When you’re looking for the best product to use, make sure you read the labels of these products and follow the instructions recommended. But before you go ahead and clean the entire area, always do a test patch. Move the bookcase, or move the TV stand, find a small area of your carpet that you can use to test the product first.
  6. Don’t clean your carpet too frequently
We all sit back and enjoy looking at our lovely clean home, especially after spending hours to make it look that way. But did you know that cleaning your carpet too frequently can be causing damage? The over use of products can speed up the wear and tear of the carpet fibres, and before you know it, you have to replace it. Make sure you’re deep cleaning no more than twice a year, using the recommend products and following the instructions they come with.
