Stop worrying about cleaning for guests this Christmas with these top tips

Does panic strike when it’s your turn to host a dinner party and there’s cleaning chores to be done? Keep calm and clean on with these simple tips to prepare your home for guests – even if they stop by uninvited.
Knowledge

Almost half (48%) of the UK worries about how their home cleanliness is perceived if a family member or friend arranges a last-minute visit to their home, according to our recent survey on people’s cleaning habits across the country.

Then there’s 73% of us that also spends up to two hours cleaning before guests arrive to prepare their homes.

Having friends and relatives around should be a relaxing time, not a stressful one – and even more so in the run-up to special occasions such as Christmas or family gathering.

Therefore, if you’re house proud – like 26% of the UK told us they were – you’ll be pleased to hear that we’ve teamed up with Channel 4’s Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners star and Vorwerk ambassador, Lynsey ‘Queen of Clean’, to offer these useful tips and cleaning advice take the stress out of preparing your home for guests.

Declutter

Start off by clearing the entrance of your home so guests don’t fall clutter when they walk in. Make sure your door mat is clean by giving it a shake and sweep away any dirt. Recommended Vorwerk product: The VC100 Handheld Vacuum Cleaner saves time so whilst you’re decluttering, get the VC100 to tackle those hard-to-reach areas with ease

Prioritise key areas

Next, clean the kitchen. Our research shows that it’s 14% of the UK’s first room to clean. So, put any dirty dishes in the sink or dishwasher and make sure your tea towels are clean. Spray a damp microfiber cloth with all-purpose spray and use it to wipe over kitchen surfaces and brush crumbs onto the floor, then vacuum the room to ensure its spick and span for your guests. Recommended Vorwerk product: The VK200 Upright Vacuum Cleaner with its SP530 DuoClean head which mops and vacuums at the same time on any type of flooring – whether tile, stone, parquet, laminate or carpeted floor

Guests to impress

The most popular room in the home, according to 44% of those we surveyed is the living room. And it’s where visitors are most likely to spend a lot of time. Therefore, tidy away clutter such as books and magazines, and if you have a pet, rub your furniture with a damp rubber glove to remove pet hair. Spray your sofas with a fabric freshener and turn your cushions over instead of vacuuming them to save cleaning time. Recommended Vorwerk product: The PB440 Electric Upholstery Brush to provide a tough, but thorough and gentle clean to preserve all delicate fabric. There’s also the Kobold MP440 Cleaning Mattress Attachment & MR440 Deep Cleaning Mattress Attachment which is a must-have for any home

Cleaning quick-fixes

The bathroom is an area in your home where your guests will spend time alone and will make judgements about how clean it is! And as 22% of us fear being negatively judged, the bathroom is an area to focus on. Even if you have a minute, do these three things to ensure a clean environment for your guests: 1. Get an antibacterial wipe and wipe down the sink, the toilet seat (with a new one) and underneath the base of the toilet. 2. Scrub the inside of the toilet. 3. Get a new fresh hand towel. Recommended Vorwerk product: The VG100 Window Cleaner to help create a streak-free finish for your bathroom windows and mirrors in half the time
