Top tips for cleaning and sanitising your mattress

Here are some of our top tips to help you #ReclaimYourMattress

Not so keen on sharing your bed with bugs, skin and sweat? Here are some of our top tips to help you #ReclaimYourMattress and keep it clean, fresh and healthy.

Treat your mattress like you would your carpet:

Remove the sheet or topper and vacuum it regularly. That’s right, literally lift your vacuum cleaner on to your mattress and move it backwards and forwards. Using a regular vacuum cleaner is better than not vacuuming it at all, but specialist mattress cleaning products such as our mattress cleaning set will help speed up the job.

Even better, dry clean your mattress:

Use a vacuum with a specialist mattress cleaning kit such as the Kobold VK200 that will remove allergy-causing micro particles from deep in the mattress and leave it clean and sanitised.

Rotate and flip your mattress:

Do this at least once every three months as part of your regular household cleaning routine. If you have a mattress designed not to be flipped (i.e. you can only sleep on one side), make sure you still rotate it. By evening out the wear, you’ll also prolong the life of your mattress!

Avoid using water to remove stains or marks:

Doing so will mean your mattress is tricky to dry thoroughly, and a moist mattress is a breeding ground for mould and mildew! If you must use water, use as little as possible and then use a fan to ensure that the mattress is completely dry before re-covering it with any bed sheets.

Deodorise your mattress:

Deodorising your mattress regularly to keep it smelling fresh is essential.  If you don’t have a Kobold with mattress cleaning set, try sifting baking soda over the mattress, leaving it for thirty minutes and then vacuuming away using your regular vacuum cleaner.

Use a mattress protector:

Mattress protectors are one of the best investments (other than a Kobold VK200!) you can make. They offer an additional layer of protection against spills and stains, and also help prevent perspiration, oils from our skin and dead skin cells penetrating the mattress and setting up home inside.

Let the mattress breathe:

Remove any mattress covers or toppers regularly (even between sheet washes) and get some air to your mattress. This will prevent smells occurring.
