Do you, like 61% of employees, wish to go it alone and become your own boss? There are many people in the UK who want to start their own business, but don’t take the plunge due to a lack of confidence and fears for their financial security, according to new research.

With just 13% of us admitting to enjoying our current careers, nearly a third (30%) of budding entrepreneurs are too scared to take the plunge – finding it ‘too risky’ to start their own businesses. And 23% of us simply do not know what to do when pursuing the idea of working for ourselves.

Over a third (36%) of potential Sir Richard Bransons or Hilary Deveys do not feel confident enough to manage their own businesses, and 32% are put off by the potential uncertainty of work coming in.

Despite the perceived barriers, those in London are most keen to pursue their business-owning ambitions (68%), closely followed by the North East (66%) and the North West (65%). Just 2% separates men (62%) and women (60%) when it comes to entrepreneurial spirit too.

Men looking for an easier life

Money is the universal motivator to change careers altogether, but women are 7% more career motivated then men, and it is men that are most likely to want to change career for an easier life. Men are more likely to be looking for a more flexible, less pressured, and less career-focused role than women considering changing careers.

The future is bright

For the fifth of us (20%) that have branched out into a new area, the good news is that the other side looks good - with the most common emotions associated with changing career being excitement (42%) and liberation (35%).
